The Bonsai Cypress Tree & How To Care For It
The bonsai cypress tree is also known as “Chamaecyparis”. Natively from Japan, it’s a fast growing tree which makes it great for beginners to start their bonsai career’s off on. It is evergreen which means it doesn’t lose its leaves, so it looks good all year round. Because it’s evergreen, it’s a nice tree to have in your garden during the winter months so your garden doesn’t look so bare. It’s also thought of as a classic bonsai tree and you’ll frequently see it in oriental works of art.
It’s got bright green leaves and the bark is dark brown. Special forms of the tree are also available in blue and golden colors. It’s a tree that needs to be watered quite frequently during the summer months although you can cut down on this during the winter time. Basically you just want to keep the soil fairly moist throughout most of the year. If you are styling the tree then wiring should only happen on the plant for about 75% of the year. It’s best to do this wiring during the growing season which is normally spring time till the end of summer. The repotting period for this plant should be done after the growing season so during the late summer/late autumn and after you have done this always remember to apply a healthy amount of fertilizer.
This plant is very good for pruning and trimming and it’s very good for practicing these skills on. So if you’re going to be practicing this you should attempt to do it during the growing season. You can really style this plant and play around with it if you wish to. It’s also during this period that you’ll want to pinch and twist off or cut back any unwanted growths or branches. You’ll also want to remove any of the leaves that turn brown during the autumn period. This doesn’t necessarily indicate that the plant is unhealthy, it’s just something you can cut back as it will aid the tree in its growth and recovery between the seasons.
The main pests you want to look out for are scale insects. To resolve this problem just spray on some insecticide. The tree can be left out in the full sun during the summer months and during the winter period you’ll want to apply some frost protection. This tree is quite popular and you should be able to obtain it in any local gardening store.
