About Using The Right Tools For The Job
Have you ever tried mixing cement with a hand mixer? It doesn’t work, does it? Hand mixers are made for light mixing jobs in the kitchen, not construction work. That’s obvious, but it makes a point. You’re making a mistake if you try to make the tools you have work on jobs they weren’t designed to do.
When you are out in your garden trimming back the hedges, the best tool for the job is a hedge clipper. You can try to do it with your 36 inch Husqvarna chainsaw, but you won’t do a very good job of it, even if you’re an expert with a chainsaw. A big saw like this is made for cutting down large trees, not tiny twigs.
Manual trimmers and clippers do the job just fine, if a little slower. When you get used to them, you might actually find that you prefer to use them. Trimming the hedges can be a very enjoyable way to while away a weekend afternoon. With manual clippers, you can do a perfect job, so if you do have an electric trimmer, keep a set of hand trimmers on hand, as well.
No matter how big or small the job you are doing, you need to have all the right tools if you’re going to do the job right. Being a woodcutter is a job that doesn’t require too many specialty tools, but it’s surprising how many tools a pro will have in the back of his truck. Cutting firewood is hard work and anything that makes it easier is appreciated.
You’ve got to be prepared for all kinds of emergencies when you’re working on a remote property. You never know when your truck will break down, so you always pack a toolkit. You may even have to winch your truck out of a ditch, so you’ll have one of those attached to your vehicle as well.
A professional woodsman probably will have a few chainsaws. While he’s got a big Poulan chainsaw for heavy work, he will also have others for cutting back branches and other lighter work. Aside from his powered saws, he will probably have one or two bow saws, just for the small trimming jobs. Then he will have his chain sharpening tools, his oil can and a toolkits for adjustments and repairs.
If cutting firewood requires that many tools, you can imagine how many tools a fine wood craftsman needs. If anybody knows the value of tools, it’s the fine woodworker. He knows that every job requires the perfect tool.
